Quiet Disciple 2011

During worship on May 15 we will be honoring Peggy Jo as our very own Quiet Disciple nominee. Be sure to come and say thank you for all she does for us. What follows is her nomination letter.

Peggy Jo Dowell would never toot her own horn except, of course, when she plays her trumpet with the Washington Avenue Brass. Her contributions to our church may not be vocal but they make a huge impact on our congregation. Some even call Peggy Jo the unofficial social director of the church. She knows everyone (past and present, old and young), remembers their birthdays, their family connections, their needs and their health status! She has the gift of hospitality.

She puts together the church newsletter and serves as secretary for the Mary and Martha’s women’s group and as substitute secretary for ad board meetings.  She has even brought us into the 21st century with her e-mail and text message reminders for special events.

Though not a morning person, Peggy Jo is the first one to show up at 4:30 a.m. to prepare for the Fly-By Balloon Festival Breakfast. She then spends several frigid hours serving coffee and goodies outside on the field. Because she receives compensation for her piano and organ playing during worship and choir practice, Peggy Jo insists they cannot be counted as part of her service. However, struggling choir members will attest that she is always ready to meet with them between practices for a bit of tutoring, and we all know that this extra mile effort is priceless.

Peggy Jo serves as an ambassador of Christ’s love through her membership in the community bell choir. This group plays in many local churches, providing “special music” for special occasions.  She never misses a meeting or a performance!  She is trustworthy and encouraging. Peggy Jo is indeed a quiet but powerful disciple.
